Medical Definition
Degenerative Disk Disease is a syndrome known also as “internal disk disruption”. It is a narrowing of the disk space, causing back pain. Disks are cartilages that lie between the bony vertebral bodies of the spine. When the disks degenerate, bulging may occur of the nucleous pulposa (the gel contained in the middle of the outer fibrous ring of the disk). Herniation of the nucleous pulposa is end stage of this bulging process.
